Description

1960s Zuni Raised Mosaic Inlay Apache Mountain Spirit Dancer by Leonard & Edith Lonjose
This Zuni (New Mexico) bolo tie is a beautiful silver and raised mosaic inlay
Apache Mountain Spirit (Crown) Dancer
. The inlay is precisely and masterfully done. Note that the inlay is nicely raised from the mother-of-pearl background (particularly the skirt), which I've attempted to capture in one of the photos. Although the tie is unsigned (which was a common practice back then) I am certain that
it was made by the famous, award-winning Zuni husband/wife team Leonard and Edith Lonjose.
In the book by Toshio Sei,
Kachinas and Ceremonial Dancers in Zuni Jewelry
, Schiffer, 2012,
two similar ties are pictured on
pp. 136-137 that are attributed to these two artists.
The strap is attached with a stamped C31 Bennett clasp. This type of clasp was the original type first introduced around 1957 and in widespread use throughout the 1960s.
The tie is
2-1/16" tall and 1-3/4" wide
,
and the original
sterling silver
tips are each 1-3/4" long
. The "buttery-soft" four-ply black leather strap appears to be the original one and shows almost no wear.
