established by Decree of the Council of the USSR of 31 October 1957.
MEDAL REGULATION
The medal was awarded to fire-fighters, volunteer fire-fighters, military personnel and other citizens:
- for the courage, bravery and dedication shown in putting out fires, saving people, socialist property and citizens' property from fire;
- for skilfully directing the combat work of fire departments in fighting fires and rescuing people;

he medal «For Courage in a fire» is worn on the left side of the chest and if there are other medals of the USSR is located after the medal «For excellent service on protection of public order».
DESCRIPTION OF MEDAL «FOR COURAGE IN A FIRE»
Material for medals:
1950-1959 silver n. ≈4000 pcs.
1959-1991 nickel silver n.
≈28000 pcs.
The medal is made in the form of a regular circle with a diameter of 32 mm.
On the front side of the coin in the upper part around the circumference, there is an inscription “За Отвагу на Пожаре”(rus), under which a five-pointed asterisk and a fire axe and a sliding key are crossed in the centre. The lower part shows a sickle and a hammer on two crossed laurel-oak branches.
On the reverse side of the coin, the figure of a firefighter with a rescued child in his arms is depicted to an incomplete height, in the background is a part of a burning apartment building, below is a laurel branch.
All images and inscriptions on the medal are raised. The front and back sides of the coin are surrounded by a convex rim around the circumference. The medal is connected with an eye and a ring to a pentagonal block covered with crepe silk moire ribbon 24 mm wide with cornflower stripes at its edges 3 mm wide each, bordered by white stripes 1 mm wide each.
AWARDS
By the beginning of 1981, about 17,000 people had been awarded the medal.
As of January 1, 1995, approximately 32,690 people were awarded the Medal “For Courage in a Fire”.
No relation to Nazi or Swastica, this is a USSR award.
